Meet Sumaira
Before I introduce myself as a professional, I would like to introduce myself as your neighbour. I have been a part of the Waterdown community since 2015 and am a proud mother of three wonderful children. As a mother, I strongly believe in empowering myself and fellow parents with the skills, tools, and opportunities needed to ensure our children feel valued and thrive.
As an HWDSB school council co-chair member and as a home visitor and facilitator for the Region of Halton and HIPPY Halton, I have developed extensive experience in navigating the diverse needs and concerns of Waterdown families, granting me the perspective needed to understand how to meet these needs and provide working solutions to ensure parents are empowered at the grass root level. As parents, we have the first and arguably the most important impact on our child’s psychological and physical growth and development. This means we must be equipped to nurture this growth and development. As your councillor, my focus will be on empowering parents by building their capacity to be involved in their children’s lives and their growth to ensure they have the best possible opportunities for tomorrow and for the years to come.

In terms of my educational and work qualifications, I hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science and currently work with HIPPY (Home Instructions for Parents and Preschool Youngsters) Halton as a Home visitor and facilitator, serving as the first point of contact in coordinating solutions to familial issues and providing support to parents and children in the Waterdown community. As a woman that immigrated from Pakistan to Canada in 2011 and settled in Waterdown in 2015, I prioritize giving back to my community. In the past five years, I have volunteered consistently for the Hamilton Police force and the Waterdown Muslim Community Centre, which established the first masjid in the Waterdown region.
